The Kenyan Mom’s Guide to Weaning: When & How to Start Solids

Author
The first 6 months pass in a blur of milk and sleepless nights. Then comes the next big milestone: Weaning! Introducing solid foods is an exciting (and messy) adventure.
Whether you are starting with traditional pumpkin and pawpaw blends or going for baby-led weaning, having the right tools makes the process much cleaner and easier.
Signs Your Baby is Ready
Most pediatricians recommend waiting until 6 months. Look for these signs:
- They can hold their head up steady.
- They can sit up with some support.
- They show interest in your food (trying to grab your chapati!).
The Essential Weaning Toolkit
Don't ruin your good clothes! Here is what you need:
- Silicone Bibs: Cloth bibs get stained instantly. Silicone bibs have a "catch pocket" for dropped food and can be wiped clean in seconds.
- Suction Bowls: Babies love to throw plates. A suction bowl sticks firmly to the table, preventing flying porridge disasters.
- Soft-Tip Spoons: Metal spoons can hurt delicate gums. Use silicone-tipped spoons designed for small mouths.
- The High Chair: A designated eating spot creates a routine. It keeps the baby safe and the mess contained in one area.
First Foods to Try
In Kenya, we are blessed with amazing fresh produce. Great starters include:
- Steamed Sweet Potato (Ngwaci)
- Mashed Avocado
- Pawpaw slices
- Butternut Pumpkin puree
