Preparing for your delivery date is equal parts exciting and overwhelming. Whether you are delivering at The Mater, Nairobi Hospital, Pumwani, or a private facility in your estate, one thing is universal: you need to be ready before the contractions start!
In Kenya, hospital requirements can be quite specific. Unlike some hospitals abroad that provide everything, many local facilities require you to bring your own supplies.
To help you avoid the last-minute "baba flani, did you forget the shawl?" panic, we’ve compiled the ultimate hospital bag checklist tailored for the Kenyan mom.
1. Important Documents (The "Do Not Forget" Pile)
Before you pack a single onesie, ensure these are in a waterproof folder:
- ID Card (Original & Copy): Mandatory for admission.
- NHIF Card / Insurance Card: Ensure your payments are up to date!
- Prenatal Clinic Booklet: Your doctor needs your history.
- Birth Plan: If you have one, print a copy for the nurses.
2. Essentials for Mom (Comfort is Queen)
Recovery is your priority. Nairobi nights can get chilly, especially in maternity wards, so pack warm.
- Heavy Maternity Shawl/Maasai Shuka: Hospitals can be cold. A heavy shawl is a lifesaver for late-night feeds.
- Nursing Bras & Nightdresses: Choose front-opening tops for easy breastfeeding access.
- Maternity Pads & Cotton Panties: Forget the cute lace; go for comfort and high absorbency.
- Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, and lip balm (labor makes your lips dry!).
- Thermal Flask: Essential! Most Kenyan hospitals provide hot water at a central point. Having your own flask means you always have hot tea or cocoa ready to boost your milk supply.

3. Essentials for Baby (The "Welcome to the World" Kit)
Your little one needs warmth immediately after birth.
- Warm Rompers/Onesies: Pack at least 3-4 heavy ones.
- Receiving Blankets: You’ll need 2 light ones and 1 heavy blanket.
- Newborn Diapers: A full pack.
- Soft Cotton Hat & Socks: Babies lose heat through their heads and feet.
- Feeding Essentials: Even if you plan to breastfeed, it is wise to have a backup. Our All-in-One Feeding Kit includes sterilized bottles and bibs just in case.
4. The "Nice-to-Haves"
- Phone Charger & Power Bank: You’ll be taking lots of photos!
- Snacks: Glucose, biscuits, or your favorite juice for energy during labor.
- Going Home Outfit: Choose something loose and comfortable for the ride home.
